Plywood vs particleboard cabinets: the comparison table

Plywood is thin wood veneers glued with the grain of each layer crossed; particleboard is wood particles and resin pressed into a panel. For a kitchen that difference shows up in three places: water, where plywood undergoes minimal irreversible swelling and particleboard does not recover; screws, which plywood holds even near an edge; and shelves, where Consumer Reports recommends 3/4" plywood and warns that thinner particleboard shelves may sag. Particleboard costs less and gives a smooth face for laminates, which is why it sits under many wrapped budget cabinets. Every RTA Cabinets Plus cabinet has a plywood box and 3/4" plywood shelves, and our boxes click together on the licensed SnapCore system.

PlywoodParticleboard
How it is madeSheets of wood veneer glued in an odd number of layers, the grain of each layer at right angles to the next.Wood particles coated with adhesive and pressed with heat into a panel, fine particles on the faces and coarser ones in the core.
WaterMinimal irreversible thickness swelling if it gets wet.The urea-formaldehyde resin common in interior particleboard breaks down with moisture, and a wet panel swells and does not recover.
Screws and hingesThe crossed layers resist splitting, so screws hold even near an edge.Holds a screw at first; a stripped hole near an edge is hard to repair.
ShelvesConsumer Reports: look for 3/4" plywood shelves.Consumer Reports: 5/8" or 1/2" particleboard shelves may sag.
Box thicknessConsumer Reports: better makers use a thicker box, for example 3/4" plywood.Consumer Reports' example of the thinner box: 1/2" particleboard.
DrawersConsumer Reports: the best drawers have solid wood sides, dovetail joints and a plywood bottom.Consumer Reports says to avoid stapled particleboard drawers.
FinishTakes real paint or stain on wood.A smooth face for laminating, so it usually sits under a paper, thermofoil or melamine wrap.
PriceCosts more to make.Costs less, which is why budget cabinets use it.

Before you buy

Four questions to ask about any cabinet.

What is the box made of?
Ask about every part: sides, bottom, back and shelves. Some cabinets mix plywood sides with a particleboard back or bottom.
How thick are the shelves?
Look for 3/4". Thinner shelves, especially particleboard ones, are the ones that sag under plates.
What is on the doors?
Real paint or stain, or a wrap of paper, thermofoil or melamine. A wrap usually means a particleboard or MDF core underneath.
What is the sink base made of?
It is the cabinet most likely to see water. If one cabinet in the kitchen should be plywood, it is this one.

Questions

What people ask next.

Is plywood better than particleboard for kitchen cabinets?

For a kitchen, yes. Plywood swells far less if it gets wet, holds screws even near an edge, and makes stiffer shelves. Particleboard costs less and is fine for furniture that stays dry.

Why does particleboard swell when it gets wet?

Most interior particleboard is bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin, and the Forest Service Wood Handbook notes that moisture breaks that bond down. Once the core takes on water it swells and does not go back.

How thick should cabinet shelves be?

Consumer Reports recommends 3/4" plywood shelves and warns that 5/8" or 1/2" particleboard shelves may sag. Our shelves are 3/4" plywood.

Is particleboard the same as MDF?

No. Particleboard is pressed wood particles; MDF is made from finer wood fibers, which gives it a smoother face for paint. Neither likes water the way plywood tolerates it.

Are RTA Cabinets Plus cabinets plywood?

Yes. Every cabinet has a plywood box and 3/4" plywood shelves, with a solid wood face frame and a 5/8" solid wood dovetail drawer box.
