What are the standard kitchen cabinet sizes?

Standard base cabinets are 34 1/2 inches tall and 24 inches deep, which puts the counter at about 36 inches once a 1 1/2 inch countertop goes on. Wall cabinets are 12 inches deep and come in heights from 12 to 42 inches, so they can stop short of the ceiling or run right up to it. Tall pantry and oven cabinets are 84, 90 or 96 inches tall and 24 inches deep. Widths step mostly in 3 inch increments: 9 to 48 inches for base cabinets and 9 to 42 inches for wall cabinets. Bathroom vanities are 34 1/2 inches tall and 21 inches deep. RTA Cabinets Plus stocks all of these sizes as ready to assemble cabinets that click together on a licensed system.

By cabinet type

The sizes we stock, cabinet by cabinet.

Every product page lists the exact width, height and depth of that cabinet. These are the ranges across the catalogue.

Base cabinets
34 1/2" tall and 24" deep. Widths from 9" to 48", mostly in 3" steps: 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42 and 48 inches. Sink bases, drawer bases and corner bases follow the same height and depth.
Wall cabinets
12" deep, in heights of 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42 inches and widths from 9" to 42". Short heights go above a refrigerator or range hood, or stack on a taller cabinet. There are 24" deep wall cabinets too, for over a refrigerator.
Tall cabinets
84", 90" or 96" tall and 24" deep, in widths of 18, 24, 30 and 33 inches, as pantry and oven cabinets.
Bathroom vanities
34 1/2" tall and 21" deep, in widths from 12" to 60". Floating vanities hang on the wall instead of standing on the floor.
Fillers and trim
Fillers close the gap between a cabinet run and a wall, and are cut to fit on site. Toe kick, crown and panels finish the run in the same finish as the cabinets.

Rules of thumb

Clearances and heights worth knowing.

  • 18 inches is the usual gap between the countertop and the bottom of the wall cabinets.
  • On an 8 foot ceiling, 36" wall cabinets are the fit (36" counter plus 18" gap plus 36" cabinet is 90"), with crown molding closing the last 6" to the ceiling. 42" wall cabinets would meet the ceiling with no room for crown.
  • On a 9 foot ceiling, 42" wall cabinets leave about 12" above them, finished with crown molding and open space above, or with trim built up to the ceiling.
  • Leave room to work: about 42" between a counter and an island for one cook, and more for two.
  • Match the appliances: a range, dishwasher or refrigerator opening is sized to the appliance, so measure each one, or note its model, before the cabinets are chosen.
