White Oak Kitchen Cabinets Online: What to Know Before You Buy

Sterling shaker cabinet door in Coastal, a greige stain on white oak

You can buy white oak kitchen cabinets online as ready to assemble cabinets, and at RTA Cabinets Plus the white oak finish is Coastal: a real stain in a greige tone on genuine white oak, with the grain showing through. Coastal comes on both of our shaker doors, as Sterling Coastal and Studio Coastal, on a plywood box with a solid wood face frame.

Here is what to check when you shop for white oak cabinets online, how to tell real oak from an oak print, and how to choose between the two doors.

Why white oak

White oak has a straight, open grain and a neutral tone that sits between warm and cool. It suits a modern kitchen as easily as a farmhouse one, it pairs with white, black or stone counters, and a stain on oak hides the small knocks a busy kitchen collects far better than a solid paint color does.

Real white oak or an oak look?

Online, a photo of oak and a photo of an oak-printed wrap can look the same. In person they do not. Check these before you buy:

  • Is it real wood under a stain? Or a paper, thermofoil or melamine covering printed with a grain pattern? A printed grain repeats, it cannot be touched up, and it can lift at the edges.
  • Does the grain vary? Real oak changes from panel to panel. Uniform grain on every door is a sign of a print.
  • What is the box? A real oak door on a particle board box is a common way to keep the price down. Ask about the box, the back and the shelves too.

Coastal is a real stain on genuine white oak, never paper, thermofoil or melamine. Our guide to painted vs stained cabinets explains how a stain wears and touches up.

Expect the grain to vary

With real wood, no two doors match exactly. Some panels show a tighter grain, some a wilder one, and the tone can shift a little from one piece to the next. That is what makes a wood kitchen look like wood. If you want every door to look identical, a painted finish will suit you better than any stain.

Sterling Coastal or Studio Coastal?

Same finish, same box, different door:

  • Sterling Coastal puts Coastal on our classic shaker door with a wider frame. It reads warm and traditional, and suits a family kitchen or a farmhouse room.
  • Studio Coastal puts Coastal on our slim-rail shaker door, for a cleaner, more modern line. With slim pulls it suits a minimal or Scandinavian look.

Each collection carries base, wall and tall kitchen cabinets, vanity base cabinets, end panels and decorative panels, plus fillers, crown and light rail molding, scribe molding and toe kick in Coastal, so the whole kitchen can be finished in the one wood.

White oak is not the only wood tone

If you want a warmer, honey-toned wood, look at Wood Ridge. It is a stained birch, not an oak, with a softer grain and a warmer color. Coastal is the one to pick when you specifically want white oak.

Pairing Coastal with other finishes

  • Coastal island, Snow perimeter. Oak in the middle of a bright room, the most common two tone kitchen there is.
  • Coastal lowers, Snow uppers. Keeps the wood where hands and feet reach, and the walls light.
  • Coastal with Caviar. Our near black Studio finish next to oak gives a strong, modern contrast.

How our cabinets are built

Every Coastal cabinet is a plywood box with a solid wood face frame and 3/4 inch plywood shelves, with full overlay doors on concealed soft-close hinges and a 5/8 inch solid wood dovetail drawer box on soft-close, full-extension glides. The box clicks together on SnapCore, a licensed click system, about 10x faster than traditional RTA cabinets built with cam locks, dowels and glue.
