Bathroom vanities

What are the best RTA bathroom vanities?

The best RTA bathroom vanities are built for a wet room: a plywood box rather than particle board, a real paint or stain finish rather than a wrap, and a box that goes together without metal connectors. RTA Cabinets Plus sells three kinds: Portico furniture vanities, 30 to 60 inches wide; Veranda floating vanities, frameless wall-hung boxes 12 to 36 inches wide that leave the floor open; and Sterling and Studio vanity base cabinets that match our kitchen doors and finishes. Every vanity is a plywood box in real paint or real stain, 21 inches deep, and the box goes together by hand.

The checklist

What to check on any RTA vanity.

A bathroom is the wettest room in the house. Steam, splashes and the occasional slow drip under the sink all find the cabinet, so the box and the finish matter more here than anywhere.

The box
Plywood or particle board. Plywood resists swelling and holds a screw; particle board swells once water reaches the core, and it does not recover. Ask what the sides, the bottom and the back are made of, not only the front. Ours: a plywood box on every vanity.
The finish
Real paint or stain can be cleaned and touched up. Paper, thermofoil and melamine wraps can lift at the edges, and humidity is hard on them. Ours: real paint or real stain on every vanity, never paper, thermofoil or melamine.
The drawers and hinges
Drawers are where a vanity earns its keep. Look for full-extension glides, so the back of the drawer is reachable, and soft-close hinges and glides, so nothing slams.
How it goes together
Traditional RTA vanities are built with metal connectors, dowels and glue. Ours go together by hand on the licensed SnapCore system, about 10x faster than traditional RTA cabinets built with metal connectors, dowels and glue: anything wood-to-wood clicks together, no tools, no glue, no screws. The only parts that need screws are the metal ones: hinges, drawer glides and pulls. Fixing the vanity to the wall takes a drill.
The size
Depth first: our vanities are 21 inches deep, shallower than a 24 inch kitchen base, which leaves room to move in a small bathroom. Then the width: measure the wall and leave room for the door swing, the toilet and any trim. Check the sink and drain position against the vanity before you order, especially on a drawer sink base, where the drawers have to clear the trap.

What we sell

Three kinds of vanity, and who each suits.

  • Portico, a furniture vanity. Built as its own piece of furniture rather than a kitchen cabinet: five-piece frame-and-panel doors on their own box, in the Mantel door style, 30 to 60 inches wide. Finishes: Snow, Quarry, Wood Ridge, Coastal and Malachite. Choose it for one finished piece with doors and drawers in a single unit.
  • Veranda, a floating vanity. A wall-hung vanity: frameless boxes that mount to the wall and leave the floor open below, which makes a small bathroom feel bigger and the floor easy to clean. Sink bases, drawer bases, single door bases and knee drawers, 12 to 36 inches wide, sized to combine into one run, in the Mantel door style. Finishes: Snow, Quarry, Wood Ridge and Coastal. Choose it for a modern look, an open floor, or a run sized to an odd wall.
  • Vanity bases that match the kitchen. Sterling and Studio vanity base cabinets: sink bases, drawer sink bases, single door bases, drawer bases and vanity drawers, in the same doors and finishes as our kitchen cabinets. Choose them when the bathroom should match the kitchen exactly.

Before you order

Two checks worth doing yourself.

  • See the finish in your own light. A full sample door is $19.99 and a quarter door sample is $4.99, shipping included on both. There is no sample door in the vanity door style yet, but Snow, Quarry, Wood Ridge and Coastal are kitchen finishes too, so a kitchen sample door shows the color. What you paid for sample doors is credited toward your cabinet order when you ask within 30 days of delivery. It is not refunded as cash, and you keep the doors.
  • Measure the plumbing, not just the wall. Note where the drain and the supply lines come out of the wall and the floor before you choose between a door sink base and a drawer sink base.

What are the best RTA bathroom vanities?

Ones built for a wet room: a plywood box, a real paint or stain finish, soft-close doors and drawers, and a box that goes together without metal connectors. Ours come as Portico furniture vanities, Veranda floating vanities, and Sterling and Studio vanity base cabinets, each a plywood box in real paint or real stain.

Are RTA bathroom vanities good quality?

They can be. Ready to assemble describes how a vanity ships, not how it is built, so check the box material, the finish, the drawers and the hinges on any brand. Every vanity we sell is a plywood box in real paint or real stain, never paper, thermofoil or melamine.

How deep is a bathroom vanity?

Ours are 21 inches deep, shallower than a 24 inch kitchen base cabinet, and 12 to 60 inches wide across the three kinds we sell.

What is a floating vanity?

A vanity that mounts to the wall instead of standing on the floor, which leaves the floor open below. Veranda is ours: frameless, wall-hung boxes in the Mantel door, 12 to 36 inches wide, in Snow, Quarry, Wood Ridge and Coastal.

Can my bathroom vanity match my kitchen cabinets?

Yes. Sterling and Studio vanity base cabinets come in the same doors and finishes as the kitchen cabinets. Order them with the kitchen and the door style and finish match.

How do the vanities go together?

The same way as our kitchen cabinets: every box ships flat and clicks together by hand. Anything wood-to-wood clicks together, no tools, no glue, no screws. The only parts that need screws are the metal ones: hinges, drawer glides and pulls.
